History of the research school

The formation of the research school dates back to 1995 when the two priority research areas were identified: archaeology (M. Klimov) and fieldwork ethnography (V. Lobach) – with a common goal, which is to study the features of the historical, ethnic, and cultural development of the Belarusian Dvina River Region. The actual historical research is developing at the same time. Since the beginning of the 2000s, the direction of biological anthropology (O. A. Yemelianchik) has been formed. It largely supplemented the Polotsk archaeology headed by D. Duk in the 2000s, who conducted large-scale excavations in Polotsk.

As a result of intensive field research of the ethnic and cultural traditions of the region, ethnographic and folklore material was recorded, which formed the basis of a unique publication for the Republic of Belarus – the Polotsk ethnographic collection (V. Lobach, V. Filipenko). In 2000-2015, a huge number of young scientists of various specializations grew up within the framework of the emerging school: ethnology and ethnography (S. Andrievskaya, V. Ovseychik, S. Shidlovsky); archaeology (I. Magalinsky, A. Kots); medieval, regional, confessional history (V. Baranenko, Yu. Kezha, V. Cherevko, etc.).

Since 2015 the fields of oral history and military-historical anthropology have been updated (A. Korsak, V. Lobach, A. Sumko). The research school has become recognized in the Republic of Belarus and abroad.
